One Book 2013-2014

Green River's One Book, One Community read this year is When the Emperor was Divine by Julie Otsuka. The novel is about the real imprisonment of 120,000 Americans of  Japanese descent during WWII.

We have several related events scheduled throughout the year, but be sure to check out the fascinating exhibit of historic photos, documents and books (you can borrow) on display in the entrance to Holman Library.

Events:

  • Green River History Faculty Member David Norberg spoke to a group about the history of immigration from Asia to the US and why Japanese Americans were interned during WWII. Catch a recording of his fascinating lecture.
  • Green River Criminal Justice Faculty Member Jane Sherwood will present "Individual Rights vs. Public Safety: WWII Internment and Today’s War on Terror” on Japnuary 29th from 1-2 pm.
  • Julie Otsuka will present at the Artists and Lecture Series on campus on April 24th.
