Trick or Treat

If the citation workshops this week aren’t enough to scare you silly, consider picking up a book or movie from Holman Library to keep you company through the foggy evenings. A few options:

For information on the holiday itself, check out Halloween: From Pagan Ritual to Party Night, available both in print and as an ebook.

Don’t let the cover fool you—"The Yellow Wallpaper" subtly creeps into your head and under your skin in a way you’re not likely to forget.  Also available: the BBC movie adaptation, viewable online (requires student number and last name).

The University of Adelaide has made Edgar Allan Poe’s works available online—check out his short stories “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Black Cat,” or “The Cask of Amontillado,” if you’re looking for a spine tingle. (Many are also available in print at the library).

Written by Alan Moore, a master of the epic comic, From Hell tells the tale of Jack the Ripper, in sixteen parts.

For movies, it’s hard to beat the classics—and we have some of them right here, including Alfred Hitchcock’s classic thriller PsychoCarrie; and (Heere's Johnny!) The Shining, the creepiest movie ever set at an isolated hotel.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg—do a subject search for “horror” in the catalog, if you dare!

Citation Workshops!

Holman Library is once again holding citation workshops to help you figure out the why’s and how’s of properly citing your sources.

Our first two Citation Workshops will be during Week 6:
·         Monday 10/28 12-12:30 in HL213
·         Wednesday 10/30 12- 12:30 in HL213

Librarians usually focus on one citation format, either MLA or APA, but  students will learn how to format in either.

You will learn how to:
  • Find NoodleTools on the Holman Library website. NoodleTools is a citation generating tool that requires students to understand and enter all the elements of the citation; e.g. author, etc.), but it formats it for them.
  • Create an account in NoodleTools.
  • Log in and create a citation folder.
  • Cite a web page.
  • Cite a journal article.
  • Cite a book.
There will be additional Citation Workshops during Week 10. So, keep an eye out for that schedule too!

Are you wondering how the government stalemate and shutdown impacts your access to information? Check this out!

To find government data from shuttered websites, try using the Internet Archive to access the data most recently available before the shutdown. Here are links to some of that data: http://blog.archive.org/2013/10/02/governmentblackout/
