There's Nothing like a Good Book

Did you know that Holman Library houses over 25,000 print books? We have books on every subject under the sun, from Achilles, the Azores and Aggression in Adolescents to Zoology, Zaire and Zakat. Our book collection is designed in large part to support your education, but we also have some books just for pleasure reading.

I found one of the best books I read this year on our new book shelf.

The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson is a wonderfully well-researched history of the Great Migration of American Blacks from the South to the Northeast, Midwest and West. Wilkerson weaves together period history and analysis with the stories of three people who lived through the era. Wilkerson does a great job of demonstrating the living legacy of slavery, racism and Jim Crow in this disturbing, but very readable work.

Helen S. Smith Gallery

Do you love art?

Take a study break and come visit the Helen S. Smith Gallery!

The entrance to the Helen S. Smith gallery, featuring artists Alan Abdulkader and Minh Carrico.

The Helen S. Smith Gallery is located inside the HLB building to the right of the main entrance. The gallery features prominent artists from across the Pacific Northwest, as well as aspiring student artists. Each year, a new exhibition schedule is created to showcase a broad range of ideas and artistic mediums. In past years, the gallery has come alive with drawings, paintings, photography, ceramics, sculptures, paper cutouts, 3D artwork, painted baskets, and more. There’s always something interesting to see! Furthermore, the gallery hosts receptions and artist talks that are available for all students to attend. If you’re interested in knowing more about an artist’s creative process and artwork, find out when the next artist talk is by checking the gallery website:  http://www.greenriver.edu/campus-life/art-gallery.htm

A glimpse of the Annual Student Exhibition.

In addition to shows by visiting artists, did you know that the Helen S. Smith gallery also features student artists? That’s right! There are two annual exhibitions that showcase the talents of our very own art students here at GRCC. One is the Annual Student Exhibition, which usually occurs in the late spring/early summer, and the other is The Artist Portfolio class exhibition, which usually occurs in the late winter/early spring. Be sure to stop by and be amazed by the work of your fellow students!
The Little Gallery, just outside the Helen S. Smith gallery, features student artwork year-round.
Here’s a little known fact before you run off to appreciate some awesome artwork: the display case located just outside and to the left of the Helen S. Smith Gallery is called The Little Gallery. This display case is meant to show off student artwork year-round, and is available for any GRCC art student to use! If you are an art student and you’d like your work featured in The Little Gallery (which would look great on a portfolio résumé), contact Paul Metivier, the gallery director. You can reach him by email (pmetivier@greenriver.edu) or call him at his extension (4766).
